California Legislature Reform: We need it NOW.

This is an essay I have written with a data I have accumulated from different sources. If I am 15 and I am this imformed, you ought to be too. GET INVOLVED. Change doesn't happen over night but it doesn't hurt to get a start on it.

California Legislature: We Need Reform
The basic duty of the government is to protect its people. This means that the government is obliged to protect the health and safety of its people, whether the threats are from foreign or domestic sources, the government is responsible to protect us. The government is supposed to be committed to the upholding of the law. “The United States Constitution is the basic fundamental law upon which all other laws- federal, state, or local- refer to and cannot contradict. The Constitution sets out the basic procedures, rights, and responsibilities of government and the fundamental rights of the governed people.” This was stated in the “United States Governmental Lecture” at Chandler University.
When governmental officials fail to uphold or fully apply the law or carry out their appointed duties, it can have deadly or disastrous consequences. An example of governmental officials failing to carry out their appointed duties is murder. A man and two of his sons were killed in July of 2008. They were killed by an illegal alien who had been arrested on other charges of assaulting a pregnant woman and trying to rob a young man on a bus. This man should have been deported after being released from prison, but because of San Francisco’s Sanctuary City policy, he was released and a man and his two young sons lost their lives. A Sanctuary City is where officials and employers are not permitted to ask a person of their immigration status. Another example of failure to protect citizens is the Jamiel Shaw Jr. case. Jamiel was a highschool athlete who was walking home from school when he was murdered by an illegal alien gang member, Pedro Espinoza, in March 2008. Pedro had just been released the day before Jamiel’s murder. He had been released from an assault charge. Pedro’s immigration status was not checked because Los Angeles is a Sanctuary City; therefore another young life was lost due to the government failing to protect its citizens. There was a law written two years ago by a lawyer and formal mayoral candidate, Walter Moore. This law was named Jamiel’s Law. Jamiel’s Law is a law that will target illegal gang members who are living openly in our communities. Eighty percent or more of these gangs are living here illegally and Law Enforcement and Politicians are aware of them.
In the last five years, California taxpayers have spent over a billion dollars to keep these convicted felons in prison. In the previous five years INS, or Immigration and Naturalization Service, has released 35,000 criminal aliens instead of deporting them back to their own countries. Over 11,000 of those criminal aliens went on to commit serious crimes. Over 1,800 of these were violent crimes. These crimes include 98 homicides, 142 sexual assaults, and 44 kidnappings. Thanks to a decision by our Supreme Court in 2001, the INS was forced to release over 3,000 criminal aliens. These criminal aliens have been collectedly convicted of 125 homicides, 387 sexual assaults, and 772 assault charges.
Many people protecting illegal aliens say that even though they have broken the law, they are “hard-working” and “they abide the law” once they get into the United States. The Justice Department Statistics say otherwise. In 2003, The Justice Department Statistics estimated that around 230,000 illegal immigrants served jail time. 108,000 of those illegal aliens are in California. Illegal immigrants make up half of California’s prison population. This creates more taxes for the citizens and chaos for local law enforcement. On further studies they have gone as far as to say that there is an average of eight arrests per illegal immigrant. Nearly all of these illegal aliens had more than one arrest, thirty-eight percent had between two and five arrests, thirty- two percent had between six and ten arrests, and twenty-six percent had eleven or more arrests. They were arrested for over 700,000 criminal offenses, this averaged at 13 offenses per illegal immigrant. Eighty percent of all these arrests were committed in California. This goes to say that the government of California has failed to protect its citizens.
How many more innocent people must lose their lives before we are heard? This is a growing issue. These are all crimes that could have been prevented if our government had not chosen to ignore the issue. When government officials turn their backs and choose to house these criminals, people die. This issue is not just going to magically disappear as most people would wish it to. No, this problem is going to get considerably worse. Unless our government chooses to deal with this issue California may be completely overrun by these illegal criminals. How much longer will you wait?

When you apply to colleges, tell Princeton I said they should snap you up.

This essay shows excellent analytic skills, and I'm not just saying that because I wrote Jamiel's Law.

I hope you will join your high school's debate team, apply for outstanding colleges, and, at some point, run for office after you've had real-world experience in the private sector.

Really great job -- A+.
